Victor is Sick and Should be Excused from Gym Class Today

By: Martha | August 29th, 2007

Upside-down V-train.Victor Obinna really, really doesn’t want to play in Serie B. The highly rated, 20-year-old striker has been engaged in a summer-long dispute with Chievo (and sort of Inter, who originally brought him to Italy and may or may not actually own him still) because they won’t let him leave to ply his trade elsewhere.

At first, Obinna was dead-set on joining Fiorentina and, according to some reports, a deal was worked out by the clubs, only to be blown up by Inter’s Massimo Moratti who hates the Viola and clearly doesn’t want Obinna to be happy. Now, though Fiorentina have evidentially moved on, the striker’s agent claims there are eight clubs still interested in his client, including Cagliari and Parma. Not one for patience, Obinna is so desperate to join anyone in Serie A that he’s now saying if Chievo don’t let him go, he’s going to pack up his stuff and head back to Nigera, long-term contract be damed.

Not surprisingly given his evident volatility, Obinna has been bailing on Chievo training sessions, and wasn’t in the team for their opening match last weekend. It’s all good, though, because he has a note from his doctor that says he’s allowed to miss training. No lie. Even Chievo’s sporting director is drinking the Kool-Aid, very seriously telling the press that the poor lad “pushed himself a bit too hard in pre-season” and “has needed a rest.” Of course he has.

So, wherever Obinna ends up, that club will have scored themselves a kid who has learned football’s most important lesson: If you’re good, you can do whatever you want and the world will bend to your will. Fantastic.

This is very bad news, I forecast him to be Serie B top scorer this year but that doesn’t look likely now, does it?

Uh oh, Ginkers. I hope you didn’t have money on it, at least.

This is obviously lame and immature behavior, but Chievo and Inter deserve a measure of blame here as well.

I thought it was reprehensible and shady the way that Inter blocked his sale to Fiorentina, without any kind of co-ownership arrangement. But Obinna’s situation has always been dicey – especially considering he has previously signed with two teams at once.

In a way, I’m glad he’s not at Fiorentina if he’s truly an irresponsible malcontent, but at the same time the kid is talented.

Totally agree with you, tmc, that the clubs should share the blame. But it’s exasperating to me when people as young as Obinna are allowed to act so entitled — surely he has advisers or an agent or somewhere who can tell him this sort of behavior isn’t in his best interest. (The other problem, of course, is that it might well be, since you know Chievo are busting their asses to get rid of him right now.)
