Video of the Week: Gila

After the international break, the man of the moment is undoubtedly Alberto Gilardino. The Fiorentina striker scored 4 goals in 2 matches with the Azzurri, including the impressive hat trick in 14 minutes vs. Cyprus. He now has 16 goals in 38 appearances (now level with Gianluca Vialli and Luca Toni) for the Azzurri and looks to be the headline striker heading into South Africa this June. His time at Milan may have hurt his reputation, with many fans saying he was just a one hit wonder, he could only score for small clubs, he couldn’t handle the pressure of a big team, he can’t score in Europe, he was a diving cheat, etc. However now at Fiorentina he is pretty much silencing all those critics, as he is one of the top goalscorers in Serie A and scores in the Champions League as well. Scoring goals for Fiorentina isn’t easy, and Gila is showing that he truly is one of Italy’s greatest goalscorers. Let’s hope he continues to shine, because the Nazionale needs a reliable striker. Gila video after the jump.

I never doubted Gilardino. Even while he was at Milan, I thought he was industrious and played his heart out. I think Inzaghi was just much better back then (06-07 season) and they got in each others way very often. His move to Fiorentina gave him a comfortable atmosphere to showcase his skills again, and he is coming back around.

If scoring 3 goals against Cyprus is so easy, then how come nobody else stepped up?

No matter what you guy say Gilardino is not the answer to Italy’s problem. He is a chump and all 3 of his goals took no skill at all.

I would call Gilardino a “poor man’s Inzaghi”, but I feel that would an insult both to Inzaghi and poor men.

If all three of his goals took no skill at all, I suggest you watch them again. The first one is a difficult header that is placed perfectly in the far corner. The second one he anticipates the central defender perfectly and scores a real poacher’s effort. The third one, ok I’ll give you that one. I could’ve scored that one too.

No offense Francesco but the first might have been the only ’skilled’ goal. Im just stating my opinion on him, if you think he is an amazing Italian striker that is your opinion also. I still don’t remember him scoring any clutch goals for Italia or any goals that really mean anything. And I can still name 5 or more players I rather start over him.

I’m not saying Gilardino is anywhere near a World Class striker that will lead us to victory, because he’s not, just that at this moment he is our most in-form, reliable striker and should be leading the line up front for the Azzurri.

    “poor man’s Inzaghi” – that’s great, haha

I really don’t like Gilardino, I don’t think he possesses enough skill to be Italy’s top striker, he may be used as a sub but I feel this should only happen when theres no one else and its in the last few minutes of a match. The two strikers of Italy should be the in-form Iaquinta and the young highly skilled Giuseppe Rossi. “nuff said
