Video of the Week: Italian Championship of footballer’s driving speeds
By: Francesco | November 27th, 2009
Towards the end of last season, Italian satirical news program Striscia la Notizia had a segment called “Campionato Italiano Velocità Calciatori” (or the Italian Championship of footballer’s driving speeds). In this segment, two comedians (Cristiano Militello and Valerio Staffelli), went to the training grounds of 7 Serie A clubs and waited for various players to drive away in their nice cars commenting it like a Formula 1 race, and then with a radar gun saw how fast they were going and how many kilometers over the speed limit they went, making it into a competition of sorts to see who was the most reckless Serie A driver. If I remember correctly, I think Atalanta’s Tiberio Guarente is Serie A’s number 1 speed demon. Videos after the jump.

Only in Italy, i don’t think you could do something like this in America without a public outrage

honestly…as much as I see this is for comedic effect, i’ve had several friends back in Italy who realize that reckless driving is a huge problem there, and very little has been done about it aside from a few public service announcements, most recently a friend who was thankfully spared on the Livorno-Pisa highway, when his MINI was swiped by some kids in a speeding Pugeot, his car rolled down a small embankment into a tree, and the force of the rolling was so much that it tore the roof clear off. To see speeding and careless driving being glorified by Serie A stars who are supposed to act as role models is a little upsetting.
