Viola Continue Bid to Sign More Players Than Everyone Else Combined
By: Martha | June 6th, 2007
Hot on the heels of signing a pile of respected youngsters, Fiorentina are digging around in the transfer market again, this time in pursuit of a trio of internationals. The big-name Italian in the mix is Palermo defender Andrea Barzagli, for whom the Viola have tabled a formal offer. There’s no word on what the offer includes (in January it was thought Palermo wanted Giampaolo Pazzini), but it’s clear the highly valued Barzagli — who has been associated with a move to Juventus during the last few transfer periods — would be the Viola’s major summer signing, should the bid be accepted by Palermo’s Captain Crazy Maurizio Zamparini.
Also on the Fiorentina dance card this week are a pair of midfielders: Chievo icon Franco Semioli and Bordeaux’s Rio Mavuba. From the moment Chievo went down, Semioli’s name has been in the papers, though the main rumors seemed to have him going to Roma, a club for which he proclaimed an affection. Now, though, the press (read: His agent) are reporting he’s close to agreeing a deal with Fiorentina. And, despite reports last month that Mavuba had agreed to terms with childhood love Juventus, he’s apparently still available, and Fiorentina are giving the Turin club a run for their money in the race for his signature. Also a Liverpool, Man U, Arsenal and Valencia target, Mavuba’s been with Bordeaux his entire career but is reportedly ready to leave France; should the Viola manage to snag him, his impact on their already strong midfield could be epic.

Andrea Barzagli is straight outta Fiesole, a beautiful hillside suburb of Firenze. In addition, this is the name of the Curva where the Fiorentina Ultras are at the Artemio Franchi (Curva Fiesloe - I’ve watched many games there).
I’m sure Palermo and their batshit insane chairman Zamparini don’t want to sell him, being that no less than Cannavaro has tapped him as the next great Italian central defender. However, he might be allowed to return to his hometown to play. Plus, no offense to any Rosanero fans, Firoentina is a much more stable and promising club at the moment.

Martha, thanks for keeping us posted on the whereabouts of La Viola. I think all the work in the transfer market looks very promising for the team. I feel next year will be a great one for Fiorentina. Cesare Pirandelli is such a great coach who believes in the team over any one player. Forza Fiore!
