Week 12, Or: How Can Seven Goals Be Grim?
By: Martha | November 20th, 2006
Is it weird that I found the Roma-Catania match really depressing? You’d think any game that featured seven goals would be thrilling and exciting and a blast to watch, right? But it wasn’t as if Roma were on fire or something — Catania had a guy sent off in the 15th minute, and Roma, rather than blowing them out of the water with their skill, took advantage of a lot of mistakes. Catania were sort of sloppy at the back, and Roma were first to the loose ball a bunch of times, managing to bundle it into the back of the net over and over and over again. Between goals, though, Catania would attack, and try to put something together. They had more corners than Roma and, at least in the first half, possession was almost even (Catania actually had the ball more, by a few percentage points). The whole thing just made me sad — when Roma score seven damn goals, I want them to be pretty and magical enough to be replayed on highlights shows until the end of time. Oh, and I want Totti to have five of them. Is that too much to ask?
So, finally, the table is taking shape — the clumping at the top is diminishing, and the proverbial three-horse race is pretty much set. The weekend’s full results are after the jump.
Ascoli - Fiorentina 1-1: A point for Ascoli! That’s something, right? And of course Toni scores in his first game back. I wonder if Mutu stomped his little foot when he saw “Toni” on the teamsheet.
Roma - Catania 7-0
Messina - Lazio 1-4: What’s that, nine goals in Lazio’s last two games? Damn. Rome, apparently, is the city of scoring these days. So to speak.
Empoli - Milan 0-0: Sigh.
Chievo - Atalanta 2-2
Cagliari - Palermo 1-0: Did I mention “sigh”?
Inter - Reggina 1-0
Torino - Sampdoria 1-0
Udinese - Siena 3-0
Livorno - Parma 3-0
And the result of all this is that Inter are finally clear at the top of the table, still undefeated and sitting on 30 lovely points. Palermo are, until next weekend, three points back, with Roma nipping at their heels on 26. For the moment, Livorno are alone in fourth with 19 points, just ahead of Atalanta.
