Week 12 Redux: Inter and Roma Inch Away
By: Martha | December 6th, 2007
All the games from Week 12 have now been made up, apart from Milan’s visit to Atalanta; with Milan wandering around in Japan for the next couple of weeks and missing two more matches, god only knows when the Atalanta game will be played. Oddly, that game in hand right now looks more important to Atalanta than it is to Milan (what a crazy thing to say), as three more points would move them up into joint fifth with Fiorentina.
Both of yesterday’s matches, though, affected only the very top and the very bottom of the table: Both Inter and Roma strolled to expected home victories, Inter beating Lazio 3-0 and Roma — featuring Franesco Totti for the first time in over a month — defeating Cagliari 2-0, thanks to two first-half goals from Rodrigo “Will He or Won’t He?” Taddei. Based on reports of the Roma match, it sounds like the two games were somewhat similar, with the home sides mostly dominating, and benefiting from the defensive frailties of the opposition. The result of the two wins is that Inter stay three points ahead of Roma who, in turn, are now five points clear of Juve, six from Udine (their victims last weekend), and seven from Fiorentina (who just lost to Inter).
At the other end of the table, the losses rooted both Lazio and Cagliari even more firmly to the danger zone. Cagliari remain one of four teams at the bottom with 10 points, while Lazio are just four points above them. Cagliari have a massive game this weekend: They face fellow bottom-dwellers Empoli (Why yes, they were in the UEFA Cup this season.), and could either lift themselves out of the drop zone or further deepen their own misery. Lazio, meanwhile, host Catania on Saturday before heading out to Madrid in need of a win at the Bernabeu in order to continue their European adventure. As if, you know, they weren’t already tired enough.
Top of the table after the jump.
