Week 15: Rampant Pozzi

By: Martha | December 10th, 2007

YAYS!Forget the top of the table, Nicola Pozzi scored four times for Empoli. Four freaking goals! And he hit the post! I don’t care how wet the pitch was, or how crummy the Cagliari defense were, that is impressive as hell, even if you’re not just 21. God damn. Also, it will come as no surprise to anyone who’s been paying attention to him that a not fully fit Sebastian Giovinco assisted on the first and the third, as well as the shot that hit the post.

The results of the goal explosion means that Empoli have escape the bottom, though they’re still in the drop zone. Empoli are on 13 points with Siena, who depended Genoa’s misery with their first away win; together, they’re three clear of bottom duo Cagliari and Reggina, both of whom are on 10 (though Reggina were due to play Milan this weekend, so they’ve got a game in hand). For the moment, we’ll provisionally add Alberto Malesani to the short list miracle workers who take over teams and turn them around — it’s only temporary, though, until we see how Empoli do against Genoa next weekend.

At the other end of the table, Inter beat Torino by a very flattering 4-0 scoreline, while Roma were held at Livorno, a result that allows Inter, who now have 37 points, to move five clear at the top. In third place, a late Pavel Nedved strike grabbed Juve three points, so they’re now on 29, three behind Roma. Udine, meanwhile, are lurking just one behind the Bianconeri thanks to their late comeback against Sampdoria, but behind them a gap is starting to open up: Fiorentina are three back, with Palermo, Napoli and Atalanta gathered three behind them on 21 points. (Atalanta, remember, still have a game in hand, thanks to their abandoned match with Milan.)

Full results, top o’ the table after the jump.

Empoli-Cagliari 4-1
Genoa-Siena 1-3
Inter-Torino 4-0
Juventus-Atalanta 1-0: Freaking Nedved.
Lazio-Catania 2-0
Livorno-Roma 1-1
Napoli-Parma 1-0: God I wish they would sort out the rights situation, so we could just WATCH NAPOLI’S HOME MATCHES. Zalayeta’s gorgeous goal is in the first minute of the highlights here.
Palermo-Fiorentina 2-0
Reggina-Milan P-P
Udinese-Sampdoria 3-2: Two goals for the no-longer-cold Fabio Quagliarella in the last 20 minutes. You’d think he knows the transfer window is about to open, or something, and wants to have his ego stroked by some more flattering rumors.

And while Milan sit 10th with 18 pts, they have TWO games in hand, thanks to the Atalanta match, and this weekends postponement of the Regginna match, due to the club world cup.

I’d say siting in 10th with two in hand is not that bad for a club who have failed to score at home all season…

You’re right, mele. I tend to ignore the middle of the table, but I’ll definitely mention it next weekend, when they’ll have three in hand and probably won’t have moved - thanks for the reminder.

I know its a little early to really judge this kid, but i hope he keeps doin what he is doin so we can buy the other half of his right (we already own half of him) and bring him back to milan… lord knows we need a goalscorer…

Juve in a few years could look like, if their talents pan out:
    Iaquinta - Palladino
    Giovinco
    Almiron - Marchisio - Nocerino
Chiellini - Criscito - New Guy - Grygera
    Buffon

    Lots of talent there.

Imagine what Giovinco could do with talent like that around him — god damn. (Also, I love the new guy at CB. Very nice.)
