Week 18, Or: While I Was Out
By: Martha | December 26th, 2006
As I was settling into the good cable-less Midwestern bosom of my family for the holidays, the first half of the Serie A season was wrapping up under what must have been a full moon: Adriano scored! For the first time in about six years, Inter’s sad, lumbering bear of a striker found the back of the net (thanks, I feel compelled to mention, to a pass from the Great and Powerful Luis Figo). Such were his glee and relief that he doubtless spend his few days off for the holidays in wild celebrations, eating and drinking everything in sight (much like you and I). As a result, he’s now seven pounds heavier than he was on Saturday, and will never score again. (Either that or he’ll go on an unprecedented tear and be bought by Chelsea for £30 million over the summer. I know where I’m putting my money.)
In other news, Roma won again while the infuriating Palermo were held by lowly Siena, leaving them a full six points back of Roma, and no longer even within shouting distance of runaway Inter, who lead Palermo by 13 and Roma by seven. Milan, meanwhile, continue their mini-revival with another convincing win thanks to more goals from Kaka and Gilardino and one from Oliveira, heretofore Italy’s second-least productive Brazilian. Could it be that they’re not going to suck all season? A good Milan could make the second half very interesting indeed.
Anyhoo, full results from the last round of the first half are after the jump.
Ascoli-Chievo 3-0: THEY WON! ASCOLI WON! Look out, Inter, here they bloody well come!
Catania-Sampdoria 4-2
Fiorentina-Messina 4-0: Fiorentina are FLYING. Don’t look now, but there’s a slight chance Adrian Mutu developed superpowers when we weren’t watching.
Inter-Atalanta 2-1
Livorno-Torino 1-1
Parma-Lazio 1-3
Reggina-Empoli 4-1
Roma-Cagliari 2-0: At this point, it’s really only newsworthy if Totti doesn’t manage at least one goal.
Siena-Palermo 1-1
Udinese-Milan 0-3
