Week 19, Or: Is There Such Thing as a One-Horse Race?
By: Martha | January 15th, 2007
Because if there is, I fear we’re heading rapidly in that direction. Inter really look nearly unbeatable right now, and with Roma drawing, Inter’s lead has ballooned to nine points. I’m not saying other clubs — namely Roma and, maybe, Palermo — aren’t capable of putting together great runs of their own, but the problem now is that Inter have to drop points for anyone else to make headway, and that’s seeming less and less likely. That said, however, two of the next three weeks are going to present tough battles: Inter play a powerful Fiorentina club next weekend, and go to Roma in early February, a game that’s already being seen (by me at least) as Roma’s last chance to remain relevant.
Looking past the top however, thing are incredibly tight moving down the table: Five points separate fourth-place Lazio from Siena, who stand fourteenth. And, yes, Milan are very much in the mix. So, even if Inter continue to run away with the title, the rest of the league should be fascinating going forward, whether it’s Roma and Palermo fight for the second spot, or 10 other teams battling for Champions League and UEFA Cup slots.
The week’s results are after the jump.
Atalanta-Livorno 5-1: This one was so humiliating it cost Livorno manager Daniele Arrigoni his job.
Cagliari-Ascoli 1-0: Sigh. And Ascoli begin another losing streak.
Chievo-Catania 2-1
Empoli-Parma 2-0
Lazio-Siena 1-1
Messina-Roma 1-1
Milan-Reggina 3-1
Palermo-Udinese 2-0: Eeeexcellent. Andrea Caracciolo, Amauri’s stand-in, scored his first goal in nine months and told us to quit acting like the sky is falling. Everything will be fine. No, really.
Samp-Fiorentina 0-0: Did you know that Fiorentina wear red on the road? That’s just totally wrong.
Torino-Inter 1-3

Inter face both Fiorentina and Roma at home. They have already played both away fixtures with these teams. Although remembering what Roma did to Inter at home last season in the league that might not be such a good thing
