Week 2: Goals, Goals, Goals!

By: Martha | September 4th, 2007

Happy people frighten me.[Note: I'm on the road through next Sunday; I'll check in when I can, but unavoidable slacking will continue until then.]

Man alive — who would have thought Napoli (who scored fewer goals than all but three of the top 10 teams in Serie B last season) would rise up and put five past anyone in the second week, let alone Udinese, a team which looked pretty good in holding Inter to a draw in week one? Palermo, also, went goal-mad this week thanks to their very own rampant midget, Fabrizio Miccoli, who scored twice and and created the other two goals in the Sicilian side’s 4-2 drubbing of hapless Livorno. Roma and Juve, meanwhile, stopped at three each, but that was enough to leave them both with six points, and joint top as the only two undefeated teams left in the league.

Among the other top(ish) teams, Inter pulled out a shaky 2-0 win over Empoli, while a tired Milan drew with Fiorentina, an exciting young side (any team that, even after the addition of Christian Veiri, still has an average age under 24, is young) that are looking increasingly serious about their goal of establishing a lasting place near the top of the league.

It’s not really fair to talk about a bottom of the table this early, but Empoli, Siena and Livorno are still looking for their first points, and Parma, Genoa and Udine have managed only a single tally in their first two games. I’m sure all those teams will just love the two weeks of nonstop training ahead of them — nothing like getting your asses kick by angry trainers, know there’s not even a game on the weekend to save you.

Full results are after the jump.

Atalanta-Parma 2-0
Cagliari-Juve 2-3
: Yes, Jonathan Zebina really slapped a photographer. Fantastic.
Catania-Genoa 0-0
Empoli-Inter 0-2
Livorno-Palermo 2-4
Milan-Fiorentina 1-1: Kaka went bonkers in the last few minutes, engaging in seriously agro actions of which I’m quite sure Jesus would NOT approve.
Roma-Siena 3-0: Another long-range strike from newly crowned King of the World, Alberto Aquilani.
Sampdoria-Lazio 0-0
Torino-Reggina 2-2
: Alvaro Recoba is already making a difference for Torino — he assisted on both goals and was active and creative until his bench-warmer legs let him down and he was substituted with about 30 minutes to go. If he and Rosina can learn to work together, Toro could actual be a pretty scary team. (Oh, and Eugenio Corini was captain. It’s the second game, and he’s already in charge. Love it.)
Udinese-Napoli 0-5

Zebina is getting a ban and apparently big fine from his own team for his stupidity. Good.

Empoli has looked good in their two losses. I know that doesn’t amount to any points but still…drawing la viola and inter in their first two matches ain’t easy. I still think they can finish top 10 this year.

What the hell happened to Livorno anyway? Why isn’t Amelia playing for them?

Joe, he’s not playing because they say he’s stressed and unsettled about all the transfer rumors. In other words, he’s being frozen out for being so desperate to leave.

huh… seems like it’s a bit of biting off your nose to spite your face, doesn’t it? At a certain point you have to stay in the top flight and getting crushed in successive weeks can’t help matters (though they’ve played Juve and Palermo so that’s not exactly easy competition). Who am I kidding? I could give a toss about the Socialist Republic of Livorno.

props to kaka. Liverani took a swing at him for refusing to kick out the ball when one of the fiorentina players was faking an injury (to stop milan from counter-attacking) and Kaka got a little revenge. Nice to know he’s not all Jesus and love.
