Week 20: U-S-A! U-S-A!

Sure, sure — there were a lot of story lines this weekend, from Inter’s unstoppable run to Totti’s sending off; from Oddo’s non-appearance to Palermo’s depressing inability to score. What’s most important, though, is that Parma’s newest striker, New Jersey-born Giuseppe Rossi, scored an utterly fantastic goal (it’s towards the end of this video) to give the team its first league win in roughly 14 years. Additionally, though he didn’t play, former NY Red Bull trainee Gabriel Ferrari — signed last week to Sampdori’s youth team but already training with the senior squad — was on the bench for his team’s 2-0 loss to Empoli. That’s right: Young Americans going abroad to play at a high level and improve their games are actually having an impact. Take that, Landon Donovan.
On non-American fronts, Inter are now 11 points clear of Roma and have officially commenced making a joke of the Scudetto race. Despite only picking up one point each, Roma and Palermo are pretty solidly in the second and third spots, so the only real races that remain are for the other European spots. Empoli currently stand fourth, but there are TEN TEAMS within six points of the spot, so there are a whole lot of teams — including some deliciously little ones — with everything to play for. At the other end of the table, meanwhile, poor Ascoli are pretty much doomed. Full results are after the jump.
Ascoli - Atalanta 1-3
Catania - Cagliari 0-1
Empoli - Sampdoria 2-0: Where the hell did Empoli come from? I’ve been distracted by the presence of Atalanta near the top of the table, and suddenly Empoli just appear, with no warning whatsoever.
Inter - Fiorentina 3-1
Lazio - Milan 0-0
Livorno - Roma 1-1: There’s something vaguely reassuring about seeing Totti lose it. For a while there, he was reaching such levels of perfection and maturity that it was hard to remember who he really was.
Parma - Torino 1-0
Reggina - Palermo 0-0
Siena - Chievo 2-1
Udinese - Messina 1-0
