Week 24: It’s All About Inter
By: Martha | February 19th, 2007
When even Luciano Spalletti admits the title is Inter’s, you know it’s a done deal. While it’s been obvious for a couple of months now that it was going to take either a miracle or many, many bribes to keep the Nerazzurri from the Scudetto, it’s sort of nice that people — including the coach of their nearest (using the term “nearest” loosely) challengers — have stopped pretending they can be caught. Now that Inter are 14 points clear, the rest of the season amounts to little more than a victory tour for them, as well as a chance to expand upon their European record for consecutive victories.
Looking elsewhere, Palermo’s swoon continues, and their loss and Roma’s have throwing the Champions League door wide open to Milan, Lazio and Empoli, all of whom are in good form right now. If Ronaldo is going to keep scoring, everyone above Milan (apart from Inter) better be looking over the shoulders, both because he’ll want their pies and because if this team goes on a run it might be very hard to slow them down. Fiorentina, too, continue to fly — though they left it late this week, they just keep climbing up the table and look like they can beat pretty much anyone on a given day.
More important than any of this, though, is the fact that Ascoli got a point. WOO HOO! They’re now within shouting distance of Claudi Ranieri and his dismal Parma squad, and not too far back from Messina. And fourth-from-bottom Chievo are a mere six points away! Look out, flying donkeys — Ascoli are coming.
Full results are after the jump.
Ascoli - Udinese 2-2
Catania - Fiorentina 0-1: Fiorentina are good, people. Really good. And I didn’t notice til just now, but their squad has some depth to it, at least up front. There’s no Palermo-style collapse coming from these guys.
Empoli - Roma 1-0
Inter - Cagliari 1-0
Lazio - Torino 2-0: Look, a Simone Inzaghi sighting! Granted, he only got a minute, but still — he played more than his whiny brother did.
Livorno - Messina 2-1
Palermo - Chievo 1-1
Parma - Sampdoria 0-1
Reggina - Atalanta 1-1
Siena - Milan 3-4
