Week 26, Or: Look Out for Flying Pigs

By: Martha | March 1st, 2007

Figo, uncharacteristically gleeful.Yes, that’s right: Inter actually dropped points yesterday. Let’s have a moment of silence for The Streak, shall we? Thank you. I know it’s going to be a difficult adjustment for all of us, but I think, with the proper support, we’ll get through this time of uncertainty together. Though Inter were playing with a very patched-together midfield, they’ve always had problems with Udinese, who were actually the last Serie A club to take a point from them, way back in October. The match doesn’t sound like a great one, but we’d be kidding ourselves if we pretended this was some sort of chink in Inter’s armor. Please! It only means they’ll win the title by 20 rather than 22 points.

The rest of the teams near the top of the table all got at least one point, with Roma, Lazio, and Empoli making the most of Inter’s slip by taking the full three points from their matches. As a result, Empoli stepped over Milan into fifth, two points behind fourth-place Lazio. Palermo, who looked great yesterday, seem more likely these days to hold onto the third spot (they’re five points ahead of Lazio), while Roma’s win moved them a virtually insurmountable eights points clear of the boys in pink.

At the other end of the table, despite my foolish excitement about the match Parma and Ascoli ground out a 0-0 draw, a result that did neither team any good: They’re rooted to the bottom of the table and, barring a miracle, won’t be seen around these parts next year. That said, among their fellow bottom clubs, the only other team to get a point was Reggina, whose draw with Fiorentina enabled them to leapfrog Messina into the fourth-bottom spot — just two points away are Cagliari and a little room to breathe.

Full results are after the jump.

Ascoli-Parma 0-0: Dead men walking.
Chievo-Roma 2-2: Both those goal? Totti. Of course.
Empoli-Messina 3-1
Inter-Udinese 1-1
Lazio-Catania 3-1
Palermo-Milan 0-0
Reggina-Fiorentina 1-1
Sampdoria-Atalanta 2-1
: Fabio Bazzani cried when he scored. And these were little, eyes-watering-style tears, please, this was serious crying — I can testify, because I saw it during a William Tell Overture moment. You gotta respect that kind of passion in a man.
Siena-Livorno 0-0
Torino-Cagliari 1-0

That was not Inter yeatserday. They weren’t even trying. As much as they are denying it, they are focused on the Valencia match. They couldn’t have cared less about yesterday’s game. Their objective was to not get hurt and/or waste as little energy as possible. I mean the only time I saw someone make a good, hard run was Maxwell just after coming on. That burst resulted in his cross being finished by Crespo. I expect the same from them on Saturday against Livorno. Of course these are just my opinions, but I am pretty certain they have no intentions of bowing out of the Champions League just yet. These 2 Serie A games they have to play before the Valencia match were/are just going to be foramlities to them. They have to show up to play them. I don’t think they are worried about the result. It was added bonus that most of the teams hovering around the top including Roma and Palermo drew their games.
