Week 30: And the League Recedes in Inter’s Rear View Mirror
By: Martha | April 2nd, 2007
For those of you keeping track, the lead is now 20 points with nine rounds to go, and Inter are closing in on the fabled century mark. And, really, at this point it would be more surprising to see them miss it — 100 points seems almost inevitable right now. Way back in the other European spots, Roma, Milan and Palermo all dropped points, while Lazio and Empoli continue to fly, the former consolidating their third-place position, and the latter leapfrogging Milan into fifth, now just two points behind the badly flagging Palermo. (I still can’t believe Empoli are doing this. Any fans of the club want to tell us about them? I’ve seen them once this season, I think, and know nothing.)
At the other end of the table, both Ascoli and Parma lost, though the latter did themselves proud by coming out and really playing against Inter, and remain three points clear of the bottom. Parma’s next three games are all at home — two against very beatable opponents — so, with Messina and Reggina just two and three points away respectively, there’s reason for optimism in their camp for the first time months. Poor Ascoli, meanwhile, were smoked by Empoli and face Fiorentina (away), Milan and Lazio (both at home) in their next three matches. Oh dear, oh dear.
Also: There was a woman linesman at the Inter-Parma game. Which is awesome, right? A woman officiating one of the top teams can only be a good thing. However, the bottom half of her uniform, as opposed to the nice pair of red shorts her fellow officials were wearing, was a skort. A SKORT, for the love of God. Sigh. Only in Italy can the status of women in football simultaneously take a huge step forward and be pushed back several decades.
Full results are after the jump.
Atalanta - Fiorentina 2-2: The first sign of weakness from the Viola? They were up 2-0 after 33 minutes and only managed to come away with a point. In better news, Reginaldo scored. Woo hoo!
Cagliari - Messina 2-0
Chievo - Sampdoria 1-1: Fabio Quagliarella scored from 40 yards. A big deal? Please! He does it all the time.
Empoli - Ascoli 4-1
Inter - Parma 2-0
Livorno - Catania 4-1: A hat trick for Professore Lucarelli — think he still wants to leave?
Reggina - Siena 0-1: For a while there things looked great for Reggina: They’d made up their 11 point penalty and were in good form, seemingly headed for the safety of the middle of the table. Their progress has stalled of late, though, and they’re now just a point clear of the drop zone. Yikes.
Roma - Milan 1-1
Torino - Palermo 0-0
Udinese - Lazio 2-4
