Week 31: Holy Crap, Look at Parma!

By: Martha | April 9th, 2007

Parma are happy. For once.Check it out, everyone — the Tinkerman’s magic has returned! Thanks to a spectacular late goal by Jersey boy Giuseppe Rossi, Parma took three points from Livorno and, in the process, vaulted to the heady air of 17th place in the table, where at least they’ll have a fight chance to stay up. Granted, since the team they’re training is the very solid Reggina (who are only near the foot of the table because of a huge penalty) the next step could be a bit harder, but still: All hail Claudio Ranieri! Ahem. Parma’s success was bad news for Messina who slipped to second-bottom, just above the utterly hapless Ascoli. In addition to Reggina, also lurking just above the drop zone are Chievo (three points clear of Parma) and Siena, who are six points safe.

Up top, meanwhile, Inter’s dropped points mean that their lead over Roma is a mere 18 points, so they’re surely looking over their collective shoulder in a breathess panic this Easter Monday. Yes, I kid. While not as impressive as Inter’s hold on the title, Roma’s grasp on second place remains pretty solid: They’ve got a seven point lead on Lazio, and aren’t looking likely to falter down the stretch. For their part Lazio — arguably the most in-form team in Serie A right now — hold a seven point lead on the dreadful Palermo, who are rapidly dropping out of the Champions League picture. The charging Milan, thanks to their impressive win over Empoli, are now just one point behind Palermo — a stunning achievement, given both their poor pre-Christmas form and that pesky eight point penalty. Empoli are now in sixth, four point above the always-impressive Fiorentina and six ahead of Sampdoria.

Full results are after the jump.

Atalanta - Chievo 1-0
Catania - Roma 0-2
Fiorentina - Ascoli 4-0: And that’s with a missed penalty, too. I don’t care how bad Ascoli are — the Viola are freaking awesome. Plus, my beloved Montolivo was everyone’s Man of the Match and also appears in every Team of the Week I’ve seen so far. Woo hoo! All he needs now is that regular Azzurri spot. Are you listening, Roberto?
Lazio - Messina 1-0
Milan - Empoli 3-1
Palermo - Cagliari 1-3: ARG. AAAARRRRRGGG! And things were going so well before that sending-off, too.
Parma - Livorno 1-0
Reggina - Inter 0-0
Sampdoria - Torino 1-0
Siena - Udinese 2-2
