Week 35: Bobo is Back!

By: Martha | May 7th, 2007

He just can't wait to be king.In case you missed it, Christian Vieri scored an absolutely sick goal yesterday, his first since his return from injury and a reminder of exactly why Atalanta took the chance on signing him in the first place. He’s only costing them the league minimum — plus the €100,000 they agreed to pay for every goal he scores. And, hell, if they’re all going to look like that, that’s a bargain price.

Though Atalanta are firmly in the middle of the table and probably won’t move much no matter how many goals Vieri scores, their win did have dire consequences for Siena, who now find themselves third from the bottom. The two teams below them, Ascoli and Messina, were finally relegated yesterday thanks to losses to Torino and Inter, respectively. Above those two, the entire bottom half of the table is in danger of falling into the relegation playoff — Siena are on 34 points, Parma (who finally lost, dammit), Chievo and Reggina are on 35, Torino and Livorno have 36, and Cagliari and Catania have 37. Whew. there may not be much excitement at the very top, but things are going to be incredibly tense at the bottom from here on out.

At the other end of the table, it will shock you to hear that Inter are top and Roma are second. Stunning, I know. Lazio, meanwhile, leapfrogged Roma with a win over Livorno, and are now in third by a point. Below Milan, who have 60 points, are tough little Empoli with 53, Palermo on 52, and Fiorentina on 51. So everything is essentially wrapped up for Champions League — even if Lazio and Milan flip-flop again, they’re both going into the qualifiers, so it makes little practical difference who ends up where. And, barring a miracle from either Atalanta or Sampdoria (both on 46 points), things are also pretty locked in for the UEFA Cup, with Empoli, Palermo and Fiorentina all qualified.
Full results are after the jump.

Atalanta - Siena 3-1: All hail Bobo!
Cagliari - Udinese 2-1
Chievo - Parma 1-0: Drat — the Tinkerman magic took a break for a week. But that’s ok! If Parma beat Messina at home next week, they’ll at least have a chance of survival (though the games against Lazio and Empoli in the last two weeks won’t exactly be easy).
Empoli - Catania 2-1
Lazio - Livorno 1-0
Messina - Inter 0-1
Milan - Fiorentina 0-0
Palermo - Roma 1-2: Sigh. And yes, for those of you keeping track, Totti did score again.
Samp - Reggina 0-0
Torino - Ascoli 1-0

Did you notice that Vieri called for Fiorentina to sign him after the game yesterday? I’m not so sure about that one, I certainly wouldn’t shell out too much money for him at this point until you can confirm that he’s regained full fitness. Plus, I’d rather see Fiorentina stick with the young and up-and-coming players, but it might be nice to have some experience since Luca’s leaving.

I saw that, tmc, but since the article makes it sound like a reporter said “Hey, so what you think about Fiorentina?” and Bobo sort of jokingly replied “Yeah, I live near there,” it sees like it’s likely to be another of those non-stories from Channel 4. That said, it’d be great to see him spearheading the Viola attack — he’d be in heaven with all those crosses coming in.
