Weekend Newsie Bits: A Pouting Trifecta
By: Martha | February 2nd, 2007
•On the back of Massimo Marracone’s near meltdown and Luis Figo’s gruff, swarthy whine comes a pouty little gem from Alessio Tacchinardi. Now on loan with Villarreal in Spain, the ex-Juve player claims he’d be gleefully toiling for the Old Lady right now were it not for his former boss: “I would have never left Juventus … I was forced to leave town because of Capello.” Of course, he never explains exactly what evil was wrought by Don Capello, but suffice to say it was entirely his fault. Poor, poor footballers. Ravaged from all sides by haters, when all they want to do is just be nice and quiet and productive. No, really.
•In other whining news, a lot of outlets have reported in the last few days that Antonio Cassano is definitely coming back to Italy over the summer, with Inter his likely destination. I can’t imagine this is true, given the apparent harmony in that team, but who the hell knows. If Mancini thinks he himself is headed elsewhere, there’s no harm in him singing the praises of a player who might demolish his current team’s chemistry.
•Pierluigi Casiraghi announced his team today for the U-21 friendly with Belgium next week, and it’s mostly made up of the usual suspects — along with New Jersey-born miracle man Guiseppe Rossi, who will earn his sixth U-21 cap if he sees any action in the match.
•And, in case this is news: Matrix could have moved to Roma last summer, but he didn’t. Just so you know.
Sigh. I’m mired in a place without football-carrying cable channels, so pity me Sunday while you’re enjoying the glorious spectacle that (we hope) will be the Inter-Roma game. And, also, go bonkers in my stead should Figo happen to a)get on the pitch, and b)score a magnificent goal. Thank you.

Yeah, Ashley, how sad is this? My prayers are with that policeman’s family and I hope no one else is hurt.

It seems that at least 100 people have been taken to the hospital with various injuries. The Italian Players’ Association has called for a 1 year suspension of play. The Azzurri friendly scheduled for Wednesday is also cancelled.

Thanks, all, for the updates. I will try to post a news roundup tomorrow, but at the moment I’m frankly so angry and depressed that I’m not making any promises.
What makes all this even more upsetting is that every time it happens there are encouraging reactions from figures around football and goverment, just like we’re seeing now — any yet nothing ever really changes. No one is brave enough to step up and take aggressive action. I hope that, 12 months for now, we’ll be seeing something different in the way fans are handled but, honestly, I’m not very optimistic.
