Welcome to Endless Transfer Saga #2: Cassano to Fiorentina

Ready for more? The latest is that Real Madrid are willing to loan Mr. Antonio Cassano out to one of a small group of clubs, an arrangement that would see the Spanish side continue to pay a large percentage of his salary — reportedly €3 million of the €4.2 million total. Whoa.

It’s being reported that Real have approached only Fiorentina, Inter, Milan and Sampdoria with the offer — how long will those clubs possibly be able to resist the temptation? Well, a couple might not find it that hard: Inter have so many damn strikers they’re likely out of the mix before things get serious, while Milan have a well-documented internal objection to Cassano, so that seems unlikely, as well. Samp I know virtually nothing about; this summer they’ve lost Fabio Quagliarella but added Vincezo Montella and Andrea Caracciolo to replace him, so their striker situation doesn’t seem overly desperate.

And that, friends, leaves Fiorentina, the club which just happens to be managed by Cesare Prandelli — the man who, yes, just happens to have been in charge at Roma when young(er) Antonio Cassano was king of the world, and who has expressed interest in helping him rediscover his form. And they’ve got a striker force which, though it’s currently propped up by one old man (Bobo) and one very young one (Lupoli), could certainly use an infusion of ability. The Viola are still claiming not to be in touch with Real, but at this price — and with a coach who has proven he can control him — Cassano is looking nigh-on irresistible.

Edit: Or, he could just sue Real. Good thinking, Antonio — that sounds like a brilliant way to reassure the world you’re not longer a crazy pain in the ass.

  That deal just shows you what a locker room cancer Cassano is. If Capello and Canna couldn’t make him grow up a little, I’m not sure who can. Canna put himself out there for Cassano in the middle of last season, publicly asking Capello and Real to give him another chance while Canna was himself struggling with his own form, and Cassano still couldn’t make anything of it.

  The minute he’s met with any kind of adversity, he throws a fit, and Real has too many young players who could be tainted by his bad attitude to keep him around (which is one of the reasons they got rid of Ronaldo–he was screwing up Robinho).

  Cassano has boxed himself in. I don’t think you would want Pazzini or Montelivo anywhere near Cassano if you’re Fiorentina…but as an impartial observer, it’ll make for some good stories.

  The Fiorentina boardroom has proved itself very canny, and I’m quite sure that if Prandelli says he doesn’t want Cassano, he won’t come in no matter how tempting the offer is. I’m not entirely against the idea because I trust Prandelli’s judgment: If the kid ends up in Florence it’s entirely because the gaffer wants him there.

  If Fiorentina take on Cassano, they have a major headache ontheir hands. Is there anyone the lad hasn’t fallen out with?

  I hadn’t heard about the deal being a loan deal with Real still shouldering the lion’s share of his salary. If true, it looks like they’re hoping he goes and miraculously has a god season so they can offload him next summer. Still, if someone wanted him for free, I think he’s there for the taking.
