What you can expect your team to spend during the transfer window

calciomercato

The winter transfer market is here, and unlike years past, this may actually be an interesting one. There have already been some moves made, but we are just getting started and there should be plenty of rumors swirling around in the coming days and weeks. Here’s a team by team guide of what you can expect each club will spend this month (if anything at all).

ATALANTA

One of the disappointments of the first part of the season. They currently are paying two managers a salary (the sacked Gregucci and currently Conte). They got ex-Lecce striker Chevanton from Sevilla, but it doesn’t cost them anything because it’s a loan. The most they spent this summer was 4.5 million on Edgar Barreto, and they made 11 million euro on Sergio Floccari’s sale. However the club finished the summer with a profit of 21,650,000 euro, so sporting director Carlo Osti has to use some of that this month to avoid any unwanted outcomes to the season (namely relegation).

BARI

They came up from Serie B so they really didn’t make any money this summer. Don’t expect big moves for players this month, because they are already at a loss of 9 million euro. They didn’t buy anyone costing over 500,000 euro this summer (Greco, Paro and Alvarez). They will try to deal with Roma the loans of Cerci and Guberti alla Roma. If an opportunity comes for them to make some money, they’ll take it. Last summer all the highest they made was 100,000 euro selling Doumbia to Andria Bat.

BOLOGNA

The new Director General Baraldi said that Bologna don’t have an economic crisis, but the work of sporting director Salvatori wasn’t very productive. They were in the red after last summer’s market. This month, because of the club’s financial balance, don’t expect them to spend any money. This summer they lost 4,730,000 euro and only gained 400,000 euro from the sale of Volpi to Reggina (300,000) and Carrus to Mantova (100,000). The transfer that hit them hard this summer was goalkeeper Emiliano Viviano (3,500,000 euro). This month they can’t afford to spend more than 2 million euro.

CAGLIARI

For Cellino’s club this will most probably be an inactive transfer market besides the loan of Lorenzo Ariaudo from Juventus, a transfer which was supposed to go through this summer. There are really no investments to be made after the 7 million euro spent in the summer. They are at a loss of 6 million euro, but it’s not a problem for President Cellino who can make a lot of money in the future if he sells his stars like Marchetti, Conti, Cossu, Matri, and Nene, who already has doubled his value since arriving in Sardegna.

CATANIA

Catania are in trouble two ways: 1) their position in the table, and 2) they are at a loss of 12,332,000 euro. Sinisa Mihajlovic has to save the ship and probably won’t get much help this month. The big error of the summer was spending 4 million euro on Barrientos. They only made 1,400,000 euro this summer from the sales of Tedesco (to Bologna for 400,000), Polito (to Salernitana 400,000), Dica (to Iraklis 250,000) and Ioime (to Spal 100,000).

CHIEVO VERONA

The Veronese club is always attentive and cautious on the transfer market. This month they may do some small things, if they can rid themselves of the big salary of Bogdani, who may go to Catania. They have only a 1,500,000 euro loss. Just think that their biggest signing this summer was Antonazzo from Frosinone. They made a mistake in selling Italiano so cheap, only 200,000 euro to Padova.

FIORENTINA

Corvino is the best sporting director in Italy and it shows. First move: Felipe from Udinese for 9 million euro and he still has 10,250,000 euro to invest. Yet again “il Corvo” demonstrated that it’s better to sell mercenaries than to buy them. He brought in close to 40,700,000 euro. The big profit margins of the sales of Melo, Kuzmanovic and Semioli were works of art. The one mistake was giving West Ham 5,700,000 euro for Savio, but Corvino is still the King of sporting directors.

GENOA

They are at a loss of 13 million euro but they can easily make that up this summer with the sales of Bonucci and Ranocchia. 66,600,000 euro spent this summer is way too much, even though they made 53,500,000 from 11 sales. After nabbing Suazo they may make some more moves, but only loans.

INTER

Inter are lucky to have an oil baron like Moratti as their president. If they are ever in the red Moratti intervenes and pumps more money into the club, like the 15,300,000 he threw in this summer. The Pandev signing on a free transfer was smart and should work out well. And they can still use some of the 69.5 million euro they got for Ibra in the summer. 15 million for Sneijder was a great deal, and they may use that same amount of money to buy Lazio’s Aleksander Kolarov this month.

JUVENTUS

They used some of their future budget to strengthen the squad. The results are dissapointing, and the supposed “Plan B – Hiddink” seems to be really in effect. They are at a loss of 37.5 million euro. They spent 55,300,000 million last summer to bring to Torino Melo, Paolucci (then loaned to Siena), Diego, Càceres and Grosso. They made 17,800,000 euro but in January they won’t be making any moves most probably. Molinaro has left and Tiago looks to be next, but those deals won’t change the financial side of things.

LAZIO

A disaster. They pulled too much on the cord and now it looks like it’s breaking. Lotito still has to get rid of the debts with the banks he inherited when he bought the club. After last summer the club were at a loss of 18,600,000 euro. They could’ve made money on Pandev and instead let him go for free, and now they want to make money on Kolarov to make up for it. The only positive: 5 million from Hamburg for Rozehnal. With Zarate’s form this season, the 20 million euro spent on him starts to look suspect as well.

LIVORNO

Livorno actually finished with a profit of 6,280,000 last summer that they can use to invest this month. The sale of Diamanti to West Ham for 6.8 million euro allowed Spinelli to make some money. The most money they spent this summer was 370,000 euro to Palmeiras for Mozart. They may look to get some loan deals this month.

MILAN

At the end of the summer the Rossoneri found themselves with 78,650,000 million euro in their pockets, and then 21.7 million of that spent on the market, which means a profit of 57 million euro for Berlusconi and co. Beckham arrives on a free loan, Adiyiah for 1.4 million euro. However it’s fundamental to spend at least 30 million this coming summer to buy reorganize the squad that needs at least one new name for every position.

NAPOLI

Napoli won’t spend much this month besides getting Andrea Dossena. Aurelio De Laurentiis spent a lot of money this summer to make Napoli competitive and because of all that money spent the Partenopei won’t be making many moves this month.

PALERMO

A 2009 to forget for sporting director Walter Sabatini. 7 million for Pastore, 2 to Ravenna to keep Succi, 4 million to Banfield for Bertolo, 2 for Goian. Bad signings of Blasi, Morganella, Melinte and Rubinho.A loss of 10,720,000 euro and still paying 2 managers a salary. Let Lanzafame go and sold 21 players, only making 4,280,000 euro. With Pierpaolo Marino now free and available, Zamparini may consider changing sporting director.

PARMA

After this summer they are down 8 million euro, because of the 4 given to Tigre for Fontanello and the 4 to Wolfsburg for Zaccardo. There is a some money to be spent this month, but Giudolin doesn’t really want to change the squad. Doing a great job this season, much goes down to the work of sporting director Pietro Leonardi.

ROMA

Got Luca Toni only having to pay his monthly salary, using most of their funds to renew the contracts of Totti and De Rossi. Made a profit of 18.5 million euro from the sales of Aquilani, Alvarez and Rosi. Cerci, Guberti, and Okaka look to be on the way out, but only on loan.

SAMPDORIA

They can only spend 4.3 million euro this month; which is what they earned this summer. They earned 13.530.000 euro and spent 9.5 million of it in the summer. Cassano and Pazzini are paid high salaries, but the club is stable and the fans are expecting at least 1 or 2 moves. Guberti may arrive from Roma, while Chelsea seem to be ready to buy Pazzini, which would bring around 20 million euro to Blucerchiati.

SIENA

Disaster without limits. They had 4.9 million to spend this summer, and wound up spending more than 3 million of it for Paolucci, who hasn’t delivered yet. They need to spend at least 2 million euro to save the team, or else relegation is inevitable. Nothing will happen until after January 11th, which is when the club will be sold to new owner Massimo Mezzaroma.

UDINESE

Udinese are always a club that finishes the season with a profit. This summer they finished with a profit of 31,317,000 million euro; the biggest sale being Quagliarella to Napoli for 18 million. However they did little to invest and the club is struggling at the moment. Sporting director Gasparin needs to buy some reinforcements this month. They spent little this summer (12,333,000) and earned a lot (43,650,000).
