Where you At, Gila?
By: Martha | May 31st, 2007
Poor Alberto Gilardino. First he’s left on the bench in favor of Super Pippo in the Champions League Final, then he goes in for surgery and misses out on key Azzurri matches, and now he doesn’t even know if he’ll be in Milan next year.
With all the endless striker rumors swirling around the Rosoneri, Gila could well find himself behind not just Ronaldo — who reportedly is about to extend his deal for another year — and maybe Inzaghi, but also Sheva, Eto’o or the ever-present Ronaldinho (though he, at the moment, might be more interest in blue than red). If any of those deals happens, the Italian would definitely need to look elsewhere, not only for first-team football but also for even a spot on the bench.
According to a handy illustration in yesterday’s La Gazzetta dello Sport, the member of the above trio most likely to arrive in Milan is Eto’o: They put his odds of joining Milan at 45% (25% to Inter, and 15% to both Barca and the dreaded Man U), while both Sheva (20% chance of a move to Milan) and Ronaldinho (30% to Milan, 10% to Inter) are more likely than not to stay at their currently clubs. How the Gazzetta knows any of this I have no idea, but it’s always reassuring to have numbers assigned to things, so I’m going to take their info as God’s own truth. (You know, like we all do with each and every once of their reports.)
Even if only one of the targets arrives, Gila is probably heading out. At the moment, Juve are his most eager suitors (Which makes sense, what with Trezeguet presumed gone and all.), but Fiorentina are also reportedly sniffing around as well. That said, though, with Gila’s price reportedly at about €20 million, he might be too rich for the blood of either club, particularly with the Viola’s recent declaration that they’re just fine, thanks, and won’t be signing any Big Name strikers.

I really doubt Eto’o goes to Milan. He’s stated numerous times he is a Liverpool fan and wants to play in the Prem. If he moves anywhere it’ll be there after La Liga is done. Pool will throw massive cash at him to make up for those ManU signings.
The Viola don’t need any strikers (If Pazzini, Mutu, Bojinov and Lupoli all fulfill their potential that’s the most lethal strikeforce in Europe bar none) but Prandelli is a huge Gila fan from his time at Parma and has said he wants him back. I wouldn’t rule it out.

Hey man, don’t leave Reginaldo out of that Viola list — he’s freaking lethal, fingers crossed he gets more time in the absence of Toni.

Yeah, I’m not a big fan of Gilardino, especially at that hefty price tag. I think Fiorentina should continue to try to add cover for their squad in the midfield and at the back. There is some speculation that Liverani may not be back, so they would need a defensive midfielder/distributor to replace him. I thought he was a key to the squad this year as a link between the defense and the midfield, though he was often overshadowed by Montolivo’s performances.
Also with Jorgensen getting a bit older, it will be key for them to try and sign Semioli from relegated Chievo, and hopefully between Semiloi, Jorgensen and a healthy Santana (the young Argentinian winger who missed most of the season) there will be enough wing play (Reginaldo often plays out there as well). All in all, it has been quite a long time since Viola fans have had this much to look forward to in a season. I can’t wait until next year.

I thought about Reginaldo. But with Lupoli coming in and Bojinov returning I don’t think he’s going to make his way past them on the depth chart.

Lord, don’t say things like that! If nothing else, like tmc pointed out, he can play out wide, so all is not quite lost.
