Whither Canna?

By: Martha | March 1st, 2007

Pretty? Who, me?On the same day Fabio Cannavaro told Spanish newspaper ABC that he was committed to staying in Spain and regaining his form (He said, “I’ve never made so many mistakes in my career, but I’m working hard on getting back to being the player I was at Juventus and the World Cup, I’m sure I’ll succeed.” All together now: Aw!), another Spanish paper reported he was in fact destined to return to Italy this summer, wearing a red and black shirt. So, you know, God only knows what’s going on. It is, however, fun to think about Oddo, Bonera and Canna on the same backline (for purely footballing reasons, of course), so I’m choosing to believe the latter story: Our boy is coming home

oh According to an article in AS, Canna’s name was raised by Milan this winter during the Ronaldo negotiations, and the club are continuing to pursue the Golden Ball winner via on-going talks between Adriano Galliani and Real’s Vicente Calderon. Speculation suggests that Real are losing patience with Canna’s lack of form and, given that he’s an old man of 33, are more than willing to let him go. Additionally, if the rumors that Real have stolen young La Liga star Alexis away from Getafe are true, they have even less reason to hang on to an aging centerback.

Canna, these are open arms you see over here in Italy. Pack your backs and get your ass home. Please.

I don’t think Canna is the type of person who is going to admit defeat at Real and tell the world he’s coming back to Italy before the season is over, but, although I know it’s still all rumor, that looks like what is happening (yay!). He’s not having a great season and the fans and press at Real have been brutal to him, so I’ll be relieved when he gets the heck out of there.

As to where…besides the Milan rumors that AS seems to enjoy because they desperately want Kaka and hope that a Canna agreement will show that relations have improved between Real and Milan, there is also talk of Juve (who have indicated they would welcome him with open arms if he takes a pay cut) and Napoli. Milan, yeah, there would be a lot of advantages to that and you didn’t even mention Nesta as one of the purely footballing reasons that backline would be so yummy…I mean good. But returning to Juve might be better for his general reputation in Italy, as would a Napoli move.

Just to let you know, it took me a couple of minutes to gather my wits to actually read your entry because of that picture. I don’t care if he’s 33. He still looks like that, so he’s fine to play for a few more years. Excuse me, I’m going back to the picture.
