Whither Champions League?
By: Martha | February 8th, 2007
There’s a lot of concern in Scotland about Celtic’s upcoming Champions League matches with Milan, specifically the one on March 7 at the San Siro. For some odd reason, Celtic and their fans aren’t jazzed about the possibility of playing a decisive match in front of a bunch of empty seats — the Irish are funny that way, they want screaming and cheering and singing as the backdrop to their play, rather than the lonely shouts of (the awesome) Gordon Strachan. Similarly, though I can’t read Spanish, I feel pretty confident there are some trouble mutterings in the Spanish press regarding Valencia’s first leg meeting with Inter, due to take place at the San Siro in less than two weeks. (Again with the silence, and the total lack of atmosphere.)
Though the final determination of which grounds will be open doesn’t come until today, the Milan clubs are already exploring contingencies including playing their “home” Champions League matches at neutral venues, either somewhere in Italy where the stadia obey the rules (Genoa, Palermo) or abroad, specifically in France or everyone’s favorite bastion of neutrality, Switzerland.
It’s all good — why, who wouldn’t want a trip to Geneva? Especially if they have turnstiles there, and electronic ticketing. Mmm … electronic ticketing.

Rangers had to play Internazionale in an empty San Siro, but I thought that was because it was Rangers.
