People are Seriously Pissed about that Whole 7-0 Thing
By: Martha | November 20th, 2006
I was bummed about Roma’s 7-0 thrashing of Catania because it wasn’t pretty enough. The Catania president, however, is way more pissed than I am, and not from the lack of pretty. After every game, it seems, Roma’s Luciano Spalletti (who I personally think is pretty awesome) waits outside the opposing team’s changing room and shakes their hands, no matter the result. Sounds pretty classy, right? The problem is that those in the Catania camp felt these particular post-game handshakes were shakes of pity, rather than respect. As in “Sorry we crushed your sorry asses, Catania. It was cute that you tried, though.” That arrogance, combined with Spalletti’s “More goals! MORE!” attitude on the touchline, stank of hypocrisy to Catania president Antonino Pulvirenti and everyone else associated with the team. Pietro Lo Monaco, the club’s director general, took the whole thing particularly hard:
“I did not understand Spalletti’s apologies, he could have avoided the scene. First they behave in a pitiless way and then they apologise – this makes no sense. They basically killed a dead man and I don’t think that is nice from a human and ethical point of view.”
Wow. I’m not even sure what that means, but I’ve got the return match (that’s week 31, for those of you playing the home game — April 7 and 8 ) on my calendar already.

I haven’t been aware of the ethical debate over killing a dead man is right or wrong, but I do know a good arse whipping when I see one and that was a good arse whipping.
