Yes, the Transfer Window Really is Closing. (Whatever Will We Talk About?)

Here’s a brief roundup of the latest signings, as well as a few rumor-y bits (one of which is an outright lie — see if you can guess which one):

•As was rumored last week, Massimo Maccarone — who cost Middlesborough £8.15 million four years ago — has joined Siena on a free and will sign a deal that ties him to the club through 2011. Yeah, you could say his star has faded. Me, I think it would help if he stopped shaving his head, but what do I know?

•Continuing the run on young foreigners kick off by Palermo yesterday, Fiorentina just completed the signing of Zdravko Kuzmanovic, a 19-year-old Swiss youth international. There’s no word on the fee, but his contract reportedly runs through 2011.

•After just a few months in retirement, Alan Shearer will make a triumphant return to football at Inter: He signed a six-month contract yesterday and will be presented to the press this afternoon. Said Shearer, “I’ve always wanted to play with the Great Matrix, and simply couldn’t turn down this opportunity. Plus, I’ve been in love with Luis Figo for years, so it’ll be nice to be close to him.”

•In other, far more dubious news, AC Milan are reportedly in talks over Palermo’s want-away whiner Andrea Caracciolo. According to Caracciolo’s agent, the teams are trying to work out a loan deal, with an option to make the move permanent over the summer (one assumes this would be a way to get around Palermo’s hefty fee demands).

•Oh and, as usual, Juve are talking about signing someone. Today, it’s teenage Belgian defender Anthony Vanden Borre. Make of that what you will.
