It’s a Slow, Slow News Day (And Bojinov is Leaving Fiorentina)
By: Martha | July 7th, 2007
This may be revealing too much, but I spent most of yesterday afternoon breathlessly reading the minute-by-minute transfer market updates at www.firenzeviola.it. (What? They were exciting!) In that time, they must have featured 10 different stories about the ever-changing status of striker Valeri Bojinov, and though nothing is yet official, it looks like the kid is going to leave Fiorentina. By which I mean sold, this time, not just sent out on loan, like he was to Juve last season. Dammit.
Heading into the weekend market meetings at Milan’s Ata Quark Hotel (which, you may recall, was also the site of the Great Envelope Frenzy earlier this summer), it was understood that Bojinov — who, impossible as it seems, is still only 21 years old — would stay at the club only if he was given some sort of official guarantee of a starting position. Yeah, those are handed out ALL the time, kid. Good luck with that.
As things developed over the course of the thrilling afternoon, it was revealed that the meeting between the Bulgarian’s agent and Viola personnel would take place at a Secret!Location outside of the hotel, clearly to escape those wild, agent-loving papparazzi. Sadly, however, the location made no difference, and the Viola’s refusal to promise Bojinov that he’d be a starter next season means he’s on the way out, with Torino and Napoli his most likely destinations.
Conveniently for Fiorentina, Napoli’s negotiations with Rolando Bianchi (AKA “White Men,” to Google translate) — once thought all-but completed — seem to have collapsed at the same time they were losing Bojinov, and the Viola have instantly focused their sights on the Reggina man. Additionally on Fiorentina’s “We Want Him” list, reportedly, is Lecce and Atalanta’s co-owned 20-year-old Argentine striker Pablo Daniel Osvaldo who, if nothing else, is cheeky as hell (check out the second and third videos here).

I’ve always been puzzled by Bojinov. I mean, he made his first team debut at Lecce at only 15, and shortly after his 18th birthday and a goal scoring streak he came to Fiorentina. However, he hasn’t been a consistent scoring threat since.
Plus, I figured this past year in Serie B with Juve would be a major coming out party for him. With the quality of the team around him (Nedved and Camaronesi feeding him the ball) and another striker like Trezeguet for defenses to worry about, plus the weaker level of competition, only 5 goals in only 18 appearances is unimpressive.
To me this says Fiorentina rate Lupoli higher than Bojinov as a 3rd striker (or 4th if they acquire any of the myriad strikers they’ve been linked with over the past couple of days). Also, they are likely to lose money considering they paid 13 million Euros for him, and I seriously doubt Torino and Napoli coming up with that kind of scratch.
I do think he is a smart buy for Torino or Napoli, as at 21 one has to expect his best years are still in front of him.
