Blast from the Past: Napoli v Juve
By: Martha | November 7th, 2006
In an encounter that recalled the days when Serie A ruled the world — Platini driving Juventus, Maradona gleefully living under a giant pile of women and cocaine and working magic for Napoli — Juve and Napoli played last night before 65,000 rabid fans last night in Naples. Granted, it was a Serie B match, but no one within shouting distance of the San Paolo Stadium was much bothered by that. (Actually, I’m pretty sure several thousand fans would have turned out to see people in Juve and Napoli kits kick one another on a dirt field in the middle of nowhere.) I haven’t watched the game yet, but based on the huge cloud of smoke that made one end of the pitch almost impossible to see when the game started, I’m guessing the fans were full of life and fully armed with flares and other things to set on fire.
The game ended 1-1, which is huge for Napoli. They’ve been lurking mid-table, while Juve were on an eight-game winning streak and also happen to feature a lineup that makes me laugh every time I see it (Just the thought of Gianluigi Buffon, Mauro Camoranesi and Alessandro Del Piero playing in Serie B is somehow hilarious. Also, what deal did Jean Alain Boumsong make with the devil that allows him to play with these people? He couldn’t even help Newcastle, for God’s sake.) — getting a point from that team have got to feel awfully good.
In my head, Naples was a carless, humanless wasteland this morning because the whole city called in hungover sick to work.

I guess when you have teams like Napoli, Genoa, Juve and Bologna, who are usually is Serie A, but playing in B, the attendance figures will surely go up. But it is a sad state of affairs that so few people are showing up for games. I will say that the Renzo Barbera in Palermo gets filled up regularly.
Personally, I think it would be great if Napoli, Juve and Genoa go up this season. I think in a few years Napoli can break up the Northern stranglehold on the league. Plus, if Juve think Boumsong can play in A, they will not find themselves at the top of the table. I’ve never seen a more inadequate defender playing for such a high profile country and club. He makes Eddie Pope look world class. If you’re bad for Newcastle, how on earth can you be good for Juve?
