Ah, the Eloquence of the Captain: “I Would Give Two Golden Balls!”
By: Martha | November 15th, 2006
Remember those reports a few weeks ago about Gigi Buffon becoming the second goalkeeper ever to be named European Player of the Year? And how we assumed they were accurate, because the security surrounding the Golden Ball voting (which, remember, has already happened) is notoriously sieve-like? Well, now I don’t know what to think, because entirely new rumors have emerged, insisting that Fabio Cannavaro will receive the award instead. When asked about the rumors, Canna, ever the media-savvy captain, was mostly aw-shucks about the whole thing, talking glowingly about the tremendous respect between himself and Buffon, and finally concluding that a pair of Golden Balls would be best. (And no, I’m not making this up. If only Americans cared about soccer — imagine the fun Jon Stewart would have talking about a pair of golden balls!) “One for me and one for Buffon,” he said. “Is that possible?”
Me, I’m just amused that, no matter where the rumors come from, they’re all about Italians. Hell, not even media king (and FIFPro Player of the Year) Ronaldinho is showing up in any of these stories, which is pleasing. Anyway, we won’t know the real winner until November 27 — that’s plenty of time for more rumors to emerge.
