Stand Back Everyone, Pavel is Pouting!
By: Martha | December 6th, 2006
You surely heard yesterday about the massive, five-game ban handed to Pavel Nedved as a result of his sending-off against Genoa last weekend. The extreme ban stemmed largely from the referee’s contention in his report that Nedved stomped on his (the poor ref’s) foot on his way off the pitch, an offense that proving darn hard to find in actual video of the match. So it’s quite understandable that Nedved is furious about the suspension — but do we really need to hear him threatening to retire because of the terrible injustice?
He’s claiming the match official is making things up and that the powers that be are trying to destroy Juve because of Calciopoli, and he’s clearly near tears at the terrible injustice (gee, wonder how the teams Juve played last year felt). Really, it’s a little hard to take when one of the biggest divers in the Italian game starts whining about what’s right, and how he’s being victimized by a mean, lying referee. What, he’s only ok with lying when it involves getting someone who just happens to be in the area sent off by rolling around screaming, clutching his ankle? Sure, that makes sense. Oh, and he’s also pissed at Juve for telling him to keep his mouth shut while the get their appeal together — he wants them to stand up and yell and stomp their feet, too. You know, like he’s doing — because apparently this behavior will get him respect. Uh huh.
Cry me a river, Pavel — sometimes life bites you in the ass, suck it up and deal. If you retire, it ought to be because you’re old and your knees can’t do it any more, not because an official was mean. And please, do it with some class and dignity, so we can be sorry you’re gone.
