The Latest on Italy’s Whiniest Czech
By: Martha | December 15th, 2006
In the week or so since Pavel Nedved went all self-righteous on us after receiving a five game ban, he has in no way become calmer on more rational. Instead, he’s still threatening to retire — not, mind you, because he’s getting old and slower, but because of the profound injustice constantly being visited upon him and his poor teammates. It appears that, in Nedved’s mind, Juve as a club has changed its ways since the Calciopoli scandal, and is now the purest of the pure. Unfortunately, the rest of football remains corrupt and evil, including, of course, those dastardly referees who have the gall to send him off and report it when he stomps on people. The nerve!
Pleasingly, Juve has lost its appeal of Nedved’s suspension. And, considering the fact that virtually all verdicts are lightened upon appeal in Italy, this surely will make Nedved even more sure The Man is trying to keep him down, which will in turn lead to ever more self-obsessed complaining. If we’re lucky, I mean. (Really, until all this happened, I was sort of a Nedved fan. Now that he’s turned into a whining child, however, I’m pointing and laughing as he suffers.) Meanwhile, the club are appealing the appeal verdict. How long this can go on I don’t know — it’s already turned into a glorious, Kafka-esque (That’s Kafka, not Kaka.) contrivance and can only get better from here.
